Conditions For Education Tax Relief

First of all, to be able to claim tax back, you must have paid fees – either on your own behalf or on behalf of another person – on one of the eligible courses outlined on this official list. The list of eligible programmes is approved and updated each year by the Department of Education and Skills.

You can claim relief on any approved full-time or part-time undergraduate course in either a private or public third-level college. It can be in Ireland or an EU member state, and the course must be at least two years long.

Approved postgraduate courses in private or publicly funded colleges in Ireland or an EU member state are also eligible. However, they must be for at least one academic year and not more than four academic years long. Also, you must already have a primary degree or an equivalent qualification.

Restrictions For Student Tax Back

Unfortunately, you cannot claim tax back on the following things:

  2. Fees for administration
  3. Fees for registration

Tax Back Relief Rates For Education

Including the Student Contribution, the maximum amount of fees that you can claim tax back for education on is €7,000 per person per course. However, for full-time students, there is no tax relief on the first €3,000 spent on tuition fees for the 2023/2024 academic year. This is also the case for part-time students for the €1,500 spent on tuition fees. Note: tuition fees include the Student Contribution.

When it comes to IT and foreign language courses, the course fees paid must not be less than €315 and not more than €1,270.

The standard rate of 20% applies to tax relief claims on tuition.

If you are a parent, there is no limit on the number of individuals for whom you can claim. If indeed you are claiming for multiple students, you get full tax relief on tuition fees for the second or subsequent students. This includes the Student Contribution.
