Renting? You could be owed up to €4,000 in Rent Tax Credits
The Rent Tax Credit is worth up to €1,000 a year for a single renter — €2,000 for a jointly assessed couple — and it can be claimed for past years too. Most renters have never claimed it. If that’s you, fill in the form on this page and we’ll claim every year you’re entitled to, along with any other tax you’ve overpaid. It takes 60 seconds, and if you’re owed nothing, you pay nothing.
Renting in 2022? That year drops out of the four-year window on 31 December 2026. After that the 2022 credit can’t be claimed at all.
Who qualifies for the Rent Tax Credit?
You can claim if you’re paying for private rented accommodation — and it’s broader than most people think:
Not eligible: rent paid to a housing body or under HAP/RAS or similar supported schemes, or rent paid to certain close family members for your main home. Only the rent itself counts towards the claim, so deposits, bills, board and laundry are excluded.
For the full official eligibility rules, see Revenue’s qualifying conditions for the Rent Tax Credit.
How much is the Rent Tax Credit worth?
The credit is 20% of the rent you paid in the year, capped at the amounts below. In practice, if your rent was more than €417 a month you qualify for the full amount for that year. It’s a credit rather than a deduction, so it comes off your tax bill euro for euro — but it can’t refund more tax than you actually paid.
| Tax year | Single | Couple (jointly assessed) |
|---|---|---|
| 2022 | €500 | €1,000 |
| 2023 | €500 | €1,000 |
| 2024 | €1,000 | €2,000 |
| 2025 | €1,000 | €2,000 |
| 2026 | €1,000 | €2,000 |
| Potential total | €4,000 | €8,000 |
The four-year rule matters here. Overpaid tax can only be claimed for the current year and the four before it — so 2022’s credit disappears for good after this year. If you were renting in 2022 and never claimed, this is the last chance to get it back.
The credit also goes to the tenant rather than the property. If four of you share a house and each pay your own share of the rent, all four of you can claim separately.
Why claim through Irish Tax Rebates?
Because the Rent Tax Credit is rarely the whole story. When you apply, our qualified tax team doesn’t just claim this one credit — we review your full tax position for the current year and the four before it: medical expenses, flat rate expenses for your job, working-from-home relief, and every other credit you’re entitled to. Renters who come to us for the Rent Tax Credit routinely leave with far more.

Rent Tax Credit FAQs
1. I’ve been renting for years but never claimed — is it too late?
No. You can claim back as far as 2022 right now. But the four-year window closes a year at a time, so the longer you wait, the more you lose.
2. My landlord isn’t registered with the RTB — can I still claim?
It depends on the arrangement — some licence arrangements qualify without registration. Apply and we’ll assess it; if it doesn’t qualify, you pay nothing.
3. I share a house with three other people. Can we all claim?
Yes. The credit belongs to the tenant, not the property, so each of you can claim on the share of the rent you paid yourself.
4. I pay my daughter’s rent while she’s at college. How much can I claim?
Up to €1,000 a year, and both parents in a jointly assessed couple can claim, bringing it up to €2,000 a year. The landlord can’t be a relation of you or your child.
5. I moved house twice last year. Does that complicate the claim?
Not at all. Every qualifying tenancy in the year counts towards the same annual cap. Give us the details and we’ll work out the total.
6. How long does it take to get paid?
Once Revenue processes the claim, rebates typically arrive within 5 working days of our review completing. We’ll keep you updated throughout.
