Tax Back For College Courses

Thinking about returning to third-level education? For many people, their intention to pursue further education is often put off by the costs involved in doing so. However, did you know that you can claim tax back on fees paid for third-level college courses, subject to certain conditions?

To help you get up to speed on the tax relief available for third level courses, we’ve outlined the most important points to note.

Who is Eligible?

Tax relief at the standard rate of income tax (currently 20%) is available on tuition fees on qualifying courses. Even if you choose to pay for a course in instalments, you may still be eligible.

Tax relief is applicable on tuition fees including the Student Contribution fee. However, tax relief cannot be claimed against examination fees, registration fees and administration fees.

1. This tax relief is applicable per course, per student, per college year.

2. Any part of your tuition fees covered directly or indirectly by grants, scholarships, by your employer or other financial aid will not be eligible for tax relief.

3. If you are self-employed, you can claim this tax credit in the Tuition Fees section on your income tax return.

4. Approved undergraduate courses must be of at least 2 years in duration.

5. Approved postgraduate courses must be at least 1 academic year in duration and the candidate must already hold a primary degree.

6. Paid tuition fees for an approved third-level college course in the last 4 years? You could be due a tax refund.
